Worksite-based Literacy Tutoring
and Cultural Mentoring
TEACH applies the cultural
mentoring approach, long-term
relationship building, and coordinated
the tutoring model to the worksite.
The one-on-one tutoring model
in the workplace setting is unique
to TEACH; typically, workplace
ESL instruction is done
in classes.
One-on-one tutoring is shown
to accelerate learning by
25% - 30%.
Enhanced Worksite-based Literacy
Tutoring and Cultural Mentoring
While TEACH has established
a one-of-a-kind worksite-based
one-on-one tutoring program,
it has been limited and has not
been evaluated in a systematic,
measurable way.
Goals of our current effort
~ Demonstrate increasing English
literacy proficiency resulting
in significant improvements in
job performance.
This would be accomplished
by measuring work dimensions
identified by the employer as
key to the job.
~ Demonstrate increasing
English literacy proficiency
resulting in significant
improvements in work-related
dimensions.
These dimensions would include
wage increases, job satisfaction,
sense of affiliation, and expanded
job opportunities.
It would also include personal
life dimensions such as improved
capability to assist children
with homework,
improved ability to communicate
successfully in day-to-day
situations, and improved quality
of life for employees and their
families.
~ Develop an approach that
can be replicated
in diverse work environments.
